- 1st Baron Burgley.
- An English politician, he was chief
adviser to Elizabeth I.
- He became 1st secretary of state in
1558.
- In 1572 he was made Lord High Treasurer.
- He was in charge of the religious settlements
of 1559.
- He was involved in the arrest and execution
of Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of
Scots).
- He was a loyal adviser to Elizabeth
I and when he died in 1598 she lost one of her most able ministers.
