  • 1st Baron Burgley.
  • An English politician, he was chief adviser to Elizabeth I.
  • He became 1st secretary of state in 1558.
  • In 1572 he was made Lord High Treasurer.
  • He was in charge of the religious settlements of 1559.
  • He was involved in the arrest and execution of Mary Stuart (Mary Queen of Scots).
  • He was a loyal adviser to Elizabeth I and when he died in 1598 she lost one of her most able ministers.
