Field of the Cloth of Gold

1520

Notes

  • England and France had been at war.
  • In 1520 a meeting was arranged between Henry VIII and the King of France to make peace.
  • The meeting was near Calais in France.
  • The gigantic tents for the meeting were made of rich gold coloured cloth and so the meeting place and the event itself became known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold.
  • The tents were also highly decorated so that the French King would be impressed.
  • The two kings became friends and made peace......
  • ...but three years later they were at war with each other again.
