Notes

  • English cleric and politician.
  • He was appointed to advise Henry VIII in 1509.
  • He became Archbishop of York in 1514.
  • In 1515 he became cardinal and Lord Chancellor.
  • Wolsey was responsible for the dissolution of the monasteries.
  • When Henry VIII wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon in 1529, he was unable to support Henry.
  • He was charged with treason in 1530 but died before he was tried.
