- John was an Italian navigator.
- Henry VII
paid for John and his three sons to discover unknown lands.
- He sailed west across the Atlantic
and landed on Cape Breton Island on 24th June 1497.
- He was the first European to reach
North America.
- In 1498 he sailed east again and probably
reached Greenland.
- This was his last voyage because he
died somewhere on this journey.
- His son Sebastian (1474 - 1557) continued
the family tradition of being a navigator and explorer.
