- Drake was an English buccaneer and
explorer.
- The Spanish thought of him as a pirate,
because he stole Spanish treasure.
- The English thought of him as a hero,
because he defeated the Spanish in battles at sea.
- Between 1577 - 1580 he sailed around
the world on the Golden Hind, robbing Spanish ships as he went!
- He was Vice Admiral in 1588 and helped
Lord Howard defeat the Spanish
Armada.
- In 1581 he was made Mayor of Plymouth.
- He made his last expedition to the
West Indies in 1595.
- In January 1596 he died of dysentery
in Panama.
